The American I Never Was Interactive RoadTrip An autobiographical novel, a radio documentary and a website by traveling author Chris Keulemans. This crossmedia project guides you through the history of American pop culture through the eyes of Dutch journalist and writer Chris Keulemans. Until recently Chris had never set foot on US soil. But having attended American International schools throughout his childhood, he felt like 'an American he never was'.

On the website you can relive your first visit to the movies, read all about the space craze, listen to your favorite Ramones gig and so on. What's more; you can leave your own personal story of your encounter with pop history.

The DVD is a road movie told in stills, about a man coming home where he has never lived. Narrator Chris Keulemans is a Third Culture Kid who always imagining that he was really from New Jersey, USA. Now that he finally arrives there, he and photographer Rob Smits aim to discover the beauty, the sense of home, that lie beneath grim surface of New Jersey.

This radio documentary (40 minutes on Dutch public radio) is a spoken letter to David Holden, writer and radio-journalist. He was 'The American I never was'. On location, in quiet little Cranford, NJ, where he grew up, his old friends will try to reconstruct who he was and where he came from.
