The Making Of An International Fashion Empire

This film takes the viewer up close and personal with the Dutch fashion duo at this turning point in their career. Documentary filmmaker Femke Wolting followed the Dutch design duo over the period of one year.

At the end of the nineties, Viktor & Rolf broke into the international fashion world as self-willed designers with their theatrical fashion shows and extravagant collections. Now they are storming the fashion circuit again and developing themselves into even more of an international label and fashion house with their own perfume, a matching catwalk collection, lines of glasses and shoes and international media attention. Can the designers enter the commercial fashion world of the LVMHs and Guccis while holding on to the originality and identity that made them big? The film Viktor & Rolf: “Because we’re worth it!” portrays Viktor & Rolf at this turning point in their career. Documentary filmmaker Femke Wolting followed the Dutch design duo over the period of one year. Viktor & Rolf: “Because we’re worth it!” begins at the Louvre in Paris at the opening of the retrospective exhibition of their first decade of work. Surrounded by prominent guests such as actress Tilda Swinton and punk guru Malcolm McLaren, the designers give a tour to the president-director of cosmetics-titan L’Oréal, who will bring their perfume on the market. For Viktor & Rolf, the exhibition marks the closing of their period as avant-garde designers. Then the film gives a unique look behind the scenes and shows close up the steps that Viktor & Rolf undertake to realize their ambitions. The film shows the intensive preparations for their fashion shows, as well: from making sketches and selecting fabrics to measuring the first designs and considering the artistic interpretation. The film also shows the preparations for campaigns and events in which they will position their new activities as an international fashion house in the market. The film therefore gives an image of the vision and working methods of Viktor & Rolf and of their special collaboration. The film shows that Viktor & Rolf capture the flame of the international fashion world, not only thanks to their exceptional creative talent, but also thanks to their strong passion and large degree of perfection.
