  Afgelopen weekend heeft de Nederlandse documentaire De Regenmakers (Rainmakers) van regisseur Floris-Jan van Luyn opnieuw een prijs gewonnen op een internationaal filmfestival.

  Op de negende editie van het International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneve, heeft de film de hoofdprijs gewonnen met een geldprijs ter waarde van ruim 7.000 euro (10.000 Zwitserse frank).

  Submarine’s latest documentary Rainmakers is nominated for one of the most prestigious television events in the world. The documentary is selected together with four other television programs, for a BANFF World Television Award in the category ”Environmental programs”. It will also compete for the ”Best of Documentary” and ”Best of Show” award at the 31st BANFF Word Television Festival.

  This year, the festival had 900 entries from more than 43 countries. According to Georges Leclere, executive producer of the BANFF World Television Awards, the festival has become in 30 years one of the highest, global accolades in the television industry.

  The Rainmakers, directed by Floris-Jan van Luyn, is about the decline of China’s environment. The story is told from the perspective of four activists who refuse to accept the ongoing ecological destruction of their homeland. On the border of heroism and stubbornness, these four remarkable Chinese civilians explain why they have the courage to fight against the pettish and aggressive local authorities.

  The international final jury will screen the programs and select category winners, special jury prizes and Grand Prize winners. There will be 5 separate award ceremonies on June 15, 2010.

  Rainmakers is a Submarine production in co-production with VPRO and ZDF in collaboration with ARTE. This production was made with the support of the; Dutch Cultural Media Fund, National Broadcasters Coproduction Fund and MEDIA program of the European Union.

  De Regenmakers – het groene verzet in China

  In de indringende en poetische documentaire De Regenmakers, volgt filmmaker Floris-Jan van Luyn vier milieuridders in China. Op de grens van heldenmoed en koppigheid, vertellen zij over hun strijd tegen de stugge en soms agressieve lokale autoriteiten.

  Wei Dongying, een vissersvrouw uit Zhejiang, Zuid-China, is een van de hoofdpersonen in ‘De Regenmakers’. Zij maakt zich zorgen over de vervuiling in haar dorp en in de Qiantang-rivier door afvalwater van omliggende fabrieken. Al jaren vecht zij tegen de fabrieksdirecteuren en de lokale overheid voor een leefbaarder bestaan.

  De Regenmakers brengt naast Wei, drie andere ongeruste Chinese burgeractivisten in beeld: een rijstboerin onder de rook van een chemische fabriek, een herder in een oprukkende woestijn en een danseres in de schaduw van de grootsteedse vuilverbranding. De visuele leidraad van de film zijn de vier elementen. Ze staan symbool voor een strijd om het milieu die veel verliezers kent en weinig winnaars.

  Biografie Floris-Jan van Luyn
  Floris-Jan van Luyn (1967) heeft Geschiedenis en Chinees gestudeerd in Groningen, Leiden, Taipei en Peking. ”De Regenmakers” is zijn derde film. Eerder maakte hij bij Submarine ”De Onverboden Stad” en in 2006 debuteerde hij met ”Cyberkoelies”. Hij is onafhankelijk filmmaker, journalist, columnist voor NRC Next en auteur van onder meer ‘Een stad van boeren’ (Prometheus 2004/Atlas 2008).

  Submarine (www.submarine.nl) is een Amsterdams productiebedrijf, gespecialiseerd in documentaires, animatieseries en games. Submarine produceerde de afgelopen jaren documentaires als de onlangs met een Gouden Kalf bekroonde film ”I Wanna Be Boss”, ”De Viagraman”, ”Rembrandt’s J’Accuse” en ”Another Perfect World”. Submarine werd in 2000 opgericht door Bruno Felix en Femke Wolting.
